Langtang Region

The land of the Tamang people, Langtang, lies just north by road from the capital city of Kathmandu in the breathtaking mountainous country of Nepal. A jeep ride six hours north of the ancient, bustling city of Kathmandu transports you to another world. A bus trip takes 9-10 hours from Kathmandu to Dhunche or Syabrubesi. High mountainous terrain plunging into deep green gorges covered by rhododendron forest and tall pines define this beautiful landscape. Nowadays, the jeep drive from Kathmandu directly goes up to Langtang Hydropower Station and you can trek to Bamboo on the same day if you want. Also, one can take direct jeep drive back to Kathmandu from Langtang Hydropower Station without staying at Syabrubesi.

Well known as the homeland of the Tamang people, and small enclaves of Tibetans, it’s surrounded by the Ganesh Himal on one side, and Langtang Peak to the other. A visit to this area allows a traveler to experience deep cultural heritage endemic to this region, and an excellent sample of rare and unspoiled ecology.

This area is defined by the park it is situated in, Langtang National Park. It is home to the very rare and threatened Red Panda. Some many other large mammals and birds can only be found in a healthy ecosystem. This bio-diverse region owes its uniqueness to the gradation in climate. Various elevation profiles and complex topography support a wide range of habitats and vegetation.

To best appreciate this incredible and unique place on Earth, one must explore it on foot. Luckily, there are an astonishing amount of trekking options ranging from easy to very challenging. Also, you can focus on either a more culturally immersive experience or choose to head straight into the sub-alpine and alpine environments. The best time to visit the Langtang region is during spring and autumn seasons when the rhododendrons start to bloom beautifully.

Langtang region trekking offers magnificent views of Mt. Langtang Lirung (Langtang Ri, 7,205 m (23,638 ft), Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Yala Peak (5500m) and many other alluring snow-fed summits all around. If you ascend up to Kyanjing ri ( (4773m / 15655 ft) just above Kyanjin Gumba (3830m), you will be rejoicing more breathtaking views of entire Langtang Himalayan panorama.

The three main treks most visitors come here to do are the Langtang Valley Trek , Tamang Heritage Trek, Helambu Trek, and Gosainkunda Lake Trek. All these Langtang Region treks are maintained by Langtang National Park which is a body of Nepal Government and Tourism Ministry of Nepal.

Helambu area is the transition between the Kathmandu Valley and its surrounding mountains, and the high alpine regions of Langtang. One can combine Day Tour to World Heritage Sites with Helambu Tour.

There are many teahouses and facilities for trekkers available, or you can opt for a mix between camping and teahouse trekking. Whichever way you choose to visit this special place, it is worth a visit to experience a slightly lesser trekked option and a distinct part of Nepal.

Langtang region was adversely hit by 2015 earthquake in Nepal, but now, everything is okay and has been revived enough to facilitate the trekkers on the trail. Tea house trekking is very popular in Langtang region rather than camping trekking since teahouse trekking is more convenient than camping.
