The Upper Mustang Trek is an 18-day trek that takes you through the remote lands of the ancient kingdoms of Nepal. The journey starts with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and then a trek to Kagbeni. From Kagbeni, we trek to Tsaile through apple orchards and ancient villages. We trek through various villages like Shyangbochen and Dhakmar to reach the ancient kingdom of Lo Manthang. 
We also trek through Chhosar, Yara, Muktinath temple, and other villages before returning to Kathmandu. The trek provides a closer look at the culture of the people of this region. The spectacular view of mountains and the Kali Gandaki River add beauty to this trek.

Best season to do Upper Mustang Trek
Since it is too cold and there are high chances of snowfall during the time between December and February, most people usually travel to Mustang during March-May and September-November. During these months, you get a clear view of the Himalayan ranges.

Upper Mustang lies in a restricted area so we will need a special permit for the trek. You also need to obtain the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit for this trek. Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu.

After you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from our company will pick you up from the airport and bring you to the hotel where you can refresh and relax. Our staff and guides will provide you necessary information about the trip by the evening.

Day 2 : Restricted Area Permit procedure (B/B)

The Upper Mustang trek lies in a restricted area. To trek through those areas, we need a special permit. Our staff will arrange the permit for the trek. While our staff prepares for the trek, you can take a tour around Kathmandu city. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 3 : Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus (B/B)

After breakfast, we embark on a tourist bus and head towards Pokhara. It is a 9-10 hour drive from Kathmandu. You hit the Prithivi highway and drive on the bank of the Trishuli River. On the way, you can enjoy the greenery of lush green hills. You will pass by several small settlements along the way. Pokhara is a beautiful city with a lake in the middle of the town and surrounded by mountains. In the evening, you can take a walk on the bank of Fewa Lake. Overnight in Pokhara.

Day 4 : Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom 2720m and trek to Kagbeni 2810m (B/B)

After breakfast, we reach the airport for a morning flight to Jomsom. A short yet scenic flight of 20 minutes over the mountains with views of mountains like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri brings you to Jomsom, the headquarters of the Mustang district. Jomsom is a big town. From Jomsom, our trek starts as we trek towards Kagbeni. Kagbeni is a historically important village. You trek through the apple orchards and taste the local wine made of apples in the evening. Overnight in Kagbeni.

Day 5 : Trek from Kagbeni to Tsaile 3050m (B/B)

After breakfast, our trek to Upper Mustang continues. We head to the riverbank of the Kali Gandaki through the windy trails. Enjoy the scenic views of the snow-capped mountains and bare red hills. We reach Tangbe village decorated with narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, and fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat, and apple orchards. We trek forward to Chhusang and reach Tetang, a village with an ancient salt mine before reaching Tsaile. Overnight in Tsaile.

Day 6 : Trek from Tsaile to Shyangmochen 3800m via Rachung Cave (B/B)

After breakfast, we begin the trek ascending the Taklam pass which offers a beautiful view of the Tilicho Peak. Then, we climb down to Samar village and trek down to the stream. On the way, we visit the famous cave called Rachung cave. After exploring the Rachung cave on the way, we trek to Shyangmochen. On the way, we can see a beautiful view of snow-capped mountains and bare rocky hills. Overnight in Shyangmochen.

Day 7 : Trek from Shyangmochen to Dhakmar 3820m (B/B)

After breakfast, we start our day as we trek through the rocky and windy paths. The trek for today is not that difficult compared to earlier days. We also hit the highest point of the trek today. The strong wind may be a little problem, but the scenic view of beautiful hills, glittering white snowy mountains, and colourful Chorten will surely make your journey memorable. After trekking for a few hours, we reach Dhakmar. Overnight in Dhakmar.

Day 8 : Trek from Dhakmar to Lo-Manthang 3810m via Ghar Gompa (B/B)

We start the trek early in the morning. Today, we visit the most important place of Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang. The ancient kingdom of Lo Manthang still has a king who rules over the kingdom. The city is walled and looks like a fort. On the way to Lo Manthang, you can visit Ghar Gompa. Locals believe that if you pray at Ghar Gompa, your wishes come true. For the rest of the day, you can explore the beautiful town. Overnight in Lo Manthang.


Day 9 : Explore to Chhoser village(3857 meters) and caves (B/B)

After spending a night in Lo Manthang, we will trek to Chhoser village. We visit the Chhoser cave, a mysterious but stunning cave famous for its architectural beauty. This cave looks like a cliff, but you will be amazed to see what lies inside. You can see 44 rooms inside the cave. After exploring the cave, you can return to Lo Manthang on a horse or jeep, or you can also trek back. The horse ride can be a different experience, so you will not want to miss it out. Overnight in Lo Manthang.

Day 10 : Trek from Lo-Manthang to Yara 3650m (B/B)

Today, we bid goodbye to the forbidden kingdom of Lo Manthang. After breakfast in the morning, we hit the road for Yara. On the way to Yara, you get the opportunity to visit the monasteries built in the 13th century, and mysterious caves, and enjoy the enchanting beauty of the landscape. The trail follows the same route from Tsarang to Sungda Chorten. After crossing the still bridge, you trek towards the Yara Gaon crossing the Dhi Gaon. Overnight in Yara.


Day 11 : Explore to Luri Cave (3950m) (B/B)

After breakfast in Yara, we prepare to visit the Luri cave. Luri cave is a historically important cave in this region, which contains murals and wall paintings that date back to the 13th century. You can explore the cave, and its surroundings enjoying the beautiful scene of snow-capped mountains. In the evening, we return to Yara. You can interact with the locals in the evening. Overnight in Yara.

Day 12 : Trek from Yara to Tangye 3240m (B/B)

After breakfast, we first ascend through the short and steep trail. The trail then continues steeply down to Dechhyang Khola. The deserted areas around look beautiful beneath the snow-capped mountains. We continue to trek as we gently descend, transitioning to a more steep descent before we reach the hidden village of Tangye. We will see many large chortens as you approach Tangye. Overnight in Tangye.

Day 13 : Trek from Tangye to Chhusang 2980m (B/B)

After breakfast in Tangye, we continue with the trek. We trek to Chhusang today. Today is probably the longest day for trekking, and also the most beautiful in terms of sceneries. After leaving the village, we cross a suspension bridge before trekking up and down to reach Chhusang. On the way to Chhusang, you get a closer look at the high mountains like Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and many others. Overnight in Chhusang.

Day 14 : Trek from Chhusang to Muktinath 3760m (B/B)

Today, we trek to Muktinath. Muktinath is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. From Chhusang, we make a long ascent through the gorge of a river to Gyu La (4,050m). After trekking for a few hours, we reach Muktinath. We visit the Muktinath temple and other important places around. Overnight in Muktinath.

Day 15 : Trek from Muktinath to Jomsom 2720m via Lubra village (B/B)

Today is the last day of our trek. After breakfast in Muktinath, we start to descend to Jomsom. We trek through the rocky and dusty paths with strong winds. You can see the beautiful view of snow-capped mountains above the rocky hills. We pass through villages like Jharkot and Ekle Bhatti before reaching Jomsom (2,720m). Overnight in Jomsom.


Day 16 : Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara (B/B)

After breakfast, we head to the airport to catch the first flight to Pokhara. We board the flight and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mighty mountains of the Himalayan range one last time. The flight is about 30 minutes long. Once you land in Pokhara, you can have lunch. You can rest at the hotel or spend the day exploring Pokhara. You can walk on the bank of Fewa Lake. Overnight in Pokhara.


Day 17 : Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu by tourist bus (B/D)

Today, we travel back to Kathmandu by tourist bus. After breakfast, we head to the bus park to board a tourist bus. Then, we start driving through the winding roads with beautiful scenes of hills covered with green forests and flowing rivers. The drive is about 6 hours long. Once you reach Kathmandu, our staff will transfer you to the hotel. You can take a short walk in the evening. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 18 : Departure from Kathmandu (B)

Today is our last day with you. After breakfast, our staff will drop you at the airport. We make sure you reach the airport on time. We then bid farewell, hoping to travel with you again.
