In north-central Nepal lies a mighty massif is known as the Annapurna Massif. It is comprised of over 30 peaks from 6000 meters to 8000 meters. Its borders include the Pokhara Valley to the south, the Kali Gandaki Gorge to the west, and on the north and east aspects, the Marsayangdi River.
Annapurna is Sanskrit and is translated to mean "Goddess of the Harvests," and has a shrine dedicated to her along the banks of the Ganges in the fabled city of Varanasi. This impressive massif is part of the larger area known as the Annapurna Conservation Area, which was designated as the first and largest in Nepal.
The Annapurna region is famous for its trekking, hiking, mountaineering, and the distinct culture of the Gurung people. Many also come to this region for mountaineering. With the dizzying array of peaks in the area to climb, there are options for all who aspire to climb summits in Nepal. This central region of the country enjoys a uniqueness all its own and will delight and challenge all travelers who choose the Annapurna region for their adventures. Autumn and spring seasons are the best for traveling in the Annapurna region. The skies are clear, providing great views of the vistas.
A decade ago, the trekking trails located in Annapurna region were very remote and lacked required facilities like transportation, foods and accommodation. But, nowadays, several local lodges/teahouses are being built and they offer all types of meals and accommodation for the trekkers. Also, communication and security system have been improved so that the trekkers can feel completely connected and safe during the trips in Annapurna region.
