Most trekkers complete the journey over 7 to 12 days, with daily walking durations ranging from 5 to 7 hours. Notably, the section from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri (2,050 m) features steep stone staircases that can be physically demanding, particularly early in the trek.

The ABC Trek altitude gain is steady, and trekkers typically spend nights at increasing elevations such as Ghorepani (2,860 m), Chhomrong (2,170 m), and Deurali (3,200 m), which supports natural acclimatization. While the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is relatively low below 3,000 m, symptoms may still occur at higher elevations, particularly during the final ascent from Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m) to ABC, where the air is thinner and snow is possible in early spring or late autumn.

Spring and autumn are generally considered the most favorable trekking seasons, offering stable weather, clear views, and safer trails.
Hiring a guide typically costs between $25 and $30 per day, while porters charge around $20 to $25 per day. You can hire guide from both Kathmandu and from Pokhara. The standard route begins at Nayapul (1,070 m), passing through Ghorepani (2,860 m) and Chhomrong (2,170 m), and covers about 115 kilometers if the Ghorepani–Poon Hill segment is included.
How Long is Annapurna Base Camp Trek? On average, trekkers walk 10 to 15 kilometers per day, traversing stone staircases, river crossings, and dense rhododendron forests. The descent usually follows the same route, although some prefer to exit via Jhinu Danda or Siwai to access local transportation.
Distances may increase with side trips, such as a visit to Poon Hill (3,210 m), which adds approximately 10 kilometers to the trek. It is advisable to plan your itinerary carefully and monitor daily distances to ensure a comfortable pace. Proper pacing and acclimatization is must before ascending up to Annapruna Base Camp.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek starts at Nayapul (1,070 m) and reaches its highest point at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m). The elevation gain progresses steadily, offering a transition from low hills and lush forests to alpine landscapes.
The initial major ascent is to Ulleri (2,050 m), notable for its numerous stone steps. The route then continues to Ghorepani (2,860 m), where many trekkers opt for a side trip to Poon Hill (3,210 m) for panoramic sunrise views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges.
From Ghorepani, the trail descends to Tadapani (2,630 m) before heading toward Chhomrong (2,170 m), which serves as the gateway to the ABC valley. From Chhomrong, the route descends to the river before rising to Sinuwa (2,340 m), Bamboo (2,310 m), and Dovan (2,600 m), finally ascending to Deurali (3,200 m) and Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m) before reaching ABC.
The segment above 3,000 m requires a slower pace and careful acclimatization. Although Annapurna Base Camp is at a lower elevation than Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), altitude-related symptoms can occur. Proper pacing and hydration are recommended throughout the ascent.
For the return, trekkers descend along the same route, with some choosing to pass through Jhinu Danda (1,780 m) to enjoy its natural hot springs before completing the trek.

Before starting the trek, two permits are required: the TIMS card (USD 20) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP, USD 30), both available from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu. Local guides and trekking agencies can assist with obtaining these permits.
The typical trekking itinerary includes overnight stops at Chhomrong (2,170 m), Bamboo (2,310 m), and Deurali (3,200 m) before reaching Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m). Many trekkers conclude their journey by descending via Jhinu Danda, known for its hot springs.
The complete ABC trek from Kathmandu generally takes 10 to 12 days, including travel time. Guides and porters are available for hire in both Kathmandu and Pokhara, making ABC one of the most accessible high-altitude treks in Nepal for visitors starting from Kathmandu.
The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek from Pokhara is hands-down the classic route for anyone aiming to stand at the foot of Mount Annapurna I (8,091 m). Pokhara, sitting at 822 meters, is where the journey kicks off. These days, most trekkers skip the old-school Nayapul (1,070 m) starting point and head straight to Jhinu Danda (1,780 m) by jeep—why not, right? The road’s made it super easy, and starting from Jhinu is just more convenient. From there, you’re looking at a 6–8 day round trip, depending on how fast you like to walk (or how many tea breaks you take).
The trail snakes through classic villages—Chhomrong (2,170 m), Bamboo (2,310 m), Dovan (2,505 m), Deurali (3,230 m)—before you finally stagger into Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters. The whole trek from Pokhara via Jhinu clocks in at about 70-75 kilometers. Sure, it’s not Everest, but you do gain a solid 3,300 meters in elevation, so don’t kid yourself—it’s a workout.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek from Pokhara is more flexible, convenient and cheaper to do. Therefore, it's better to begin ABC trek from Pokhara rather than from Kathmandu. However, it ups to you and your interest.
Teahouses along the way? Expect to shell out NPR 500–1,000 per night for a bed, and meals will run you NPR 700–1,000 a pop (yup, prices climb with the altitude). You’ll need two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) at NPR 3,000 and a TIMS card for NPR 2,000. Want a guide? That’s about NPR 2,500–3,000 per day.
What’s the trail like? Dense forests, endless stone staircases, bamboo jungles, waterfalls, and mountain views that’ll make your camera beg for mercy. It’s stunning, accessible, and honestly, perfect for both rookie trekkers and seasoned hikers looking for a new fix.
So, how far is it from Pokhara to ABC? Depends where you start. The old-school way—starting from Nayapul (1,070 m)—the round trip is about 115 km. But with the better road, most folks now hop a jeep to Jhinu Danda (1,780 m) and start there, which trims the trek down to about 70–75 km.
From Jhinu, you’ll trek up to Chhomrong, then through Bamboo, Dovan, Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m), and finally ABC. Each day you’ll bang out anywhere from 8 to 14 km, depending on how the trail is feeling (and, let’s be real, how your legs are feeling).
You’ll head back the same way—7–8 days covers it for most. Counting the drive to and from Jhinu, the total journey from Pokhara is roughly 150 km. The jeep ride from Pokhara to Jhinu? About 4 hours and NPR 2,000–3,000 per seat.
And no, you can’t just walk straight from Pokhara to ABC. The real trekking starts after the drive. With the altitude and those ridiculous stair climbs, don’t underestimate it—short distance, but it’ll kick your butt if you’re not ready.
Kathmandu, chilling at 1,400 meters, sits about 200 kilometers away from Pokhara (the ABC trek’s jump-off point). Getting there takes 6–9 hours by bus (NPR 1,200–2,000) or a quick 25-minute flight (NPR 3,500–5,000—worth it if you hate bus rides).
From Pokhara, it’s the same drill: drive to Jhinu Danda and hit the trail for ABC. Counting road and trek, you’re looking at a round trip of about 280–290 km from Kathmandu to ABC and back.
The trek itself—if you start at Jhinu—is still 70–75 km round trip. The path takes you through Chhomrong, Dovan, Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and, finally, ABC. You’ll retrace your steps the whole way back.
The altitude jump is no joke—1,400 meters in Kathmandu up to 4,130 meters at ABC—so take it easy and give yourself time to acclimatize. Permits and guide fees are the same as before. And no, you can’t just walk the whole way from Kathmandu; the hiking starts once you hit the trekhead.
Jhinu Danda (1,780 m) is the new favorite starting point for the ABC trek, thanks to the improved road. It’s a 52 km, 4-hour jeep ride from Pokhara—fairly comfy and about NPR 1,000–2,000 per person on sharing basis.
From Jhinu Danda, it’s a 28–30km trek one way to ABC, so about 70–75 km round trip. The route? Chhomrong, a quick dip to Chhomrong Khola, then the grind up through Bamboo, Dovan, Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and finally the big finish at ABC.
Most trekkers take 3–4 days to reach ABC from Jhinu, then 2–3 days to get back. The trail has its steep moments, and you’ll cross forests, rivers, and even some avalanche-prone stretches near Deurali (stay alert, folks).
Pro tip: Crash in Jhinu before or after your trek and hit the hot springs—just a 15-minute walk downhill, and honestly, your legs will thank you. Teahouse rates and food prices are the same as elsewhere on the trail. Don’t forget your ACAP and TIMS permits.
Starting at Jhinu keeps things shorter but doesn’t shortchange you on the experience. If you’re pressed for time or just don’t want to slog through the longer approach, this is your move.
The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek—often referred to as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek—guides trekkers into a breathtaking natural amphitheater, encircled by towering Himalayan peaks. The final destination, Annapurna Base Camp, is set at an altitude of 4,130 meters and is surrounded by impressive summits such as Annapurna I (8,091 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m), Machapuchare (6,993 m), and Annapurna South (7,219 m). The journey begins at Nayapul (1,070 m) and ascends steadily through notable stops including Ghandruk (1,940 m), Chhomrong (2,170 m), Dovan (2,600 m), Deurali (3,230 m), and Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700 m). Many of the trekkers love beginning Annapurna Base Camp Trek from Jhinu Danda these days.
The ABC trek covers around 115 kilometers round-trip and generally takes between 7 and 11 days to complete, depending on individual pace. Required permits include the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) at $30 and the TIMS card at $20. Daily expenses for accommodation and meals in teahouses typically range from $25–$35. The sanctuary offers a rare opportunity to journey into the heart of the Annapurna range—a region deeply revered by the local Gurung community. After Bamboo (2,310 m), the valley narrows, the gradient increases, and temperatures drop, while snow-capped peaks surround trekkers on all sides near the base camp. The sense of isolation and natural grandeur is unparalleled within Nepal.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is entirely situated within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), Nepal’s largest protected region, spanning 7,629 square kilometers—from 790 meters at Nayapul up to over 8,000 meters at Annapurna I. Managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation, the ACA operates under a community-led model. Entry requires an ACAP permit, priced at $30.
As trekkers move beyond Ghandruk (1,940 m), they encounter dense forests of rhododendron and oak, which transition to bamboo groves near Sinuwa (2,340 m) and Dovan (2,600 m). Higher elevations near Deurali (3,230 m) and Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700 m) feature thinning woodland and open alpine grasslands. The conservation area protects endangered species including the snow leopard and Himalayan thar, while also supporting numerous village economies through eco-tourism initiatives.
Teahouses along the route employ solar power, biogas, and waste management systems to minimize environmental impact. Single-use plastics are discouraged, and purified water is available for approximately $1 per liter. The ACA also plays a vital role in preserving local culture and supporting education, making the trek both visually stunning and ethically rewarding. Every step within the ACA connects trekkers to a broader vision of sustainable tourism.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek traverses diverse ecological zones, ranging from subtropical forests to alpine tundra. The lower sections near Nayapul (1,070 m) are characterized by lush forests of sal and chestnut. Around Ghandruk (1,940 m), rhododendron and oak dominate, particularly vibrant during the spring bloom (March–April) when the hillsides are ablaze with color.
As the path climbs past Chhomrong (2,170 m) and Bamboo (2,310 m), trekkers encounter bamboo forests, with ferns and orchids thriving along moist slopes. Beyond Deurali (3,230 m), vegetation becomes sparse, giving way to juniper shrubs, mosses, and lichens clinging to rocky surfaces. At Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700 m) and ABC (4,130 m), the landscape is alpine, featuring dwarf grasses and scattered herbs.
Wildlife in the Annapurna Conservation Area includes Himalayan monals, langur monkeys, and Himalayan musk deer. Early risers may hear pheasants calling, and with luck, spot a red panda or Himalayan thar between Bamboo and Dovan (2,600 m). Binoculars are recommended for wildlife observation. Trekkers are advised to avoid loud noises and to stay on designated trails to protect these fragile ecosystems. Local guides are a valuable resource for learning about the region’s unique flora and fauna. It is important to respect the environment by not picking plants or feeding wildlife, as the trek offers a living classroom for biodiversity.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek passes through villages inhabited by Gurung and Magar communities, both known for their rich traditions and warm hospitality. In Ghandruk (1,940 m), visitors can explore the Gurung Museum and admire traditional stone houses. Locals often wear traditional attire and adhere to Buddhism and Bon religious practices. Chhomrong (2,170 m) is another cultural highlight, where teahouses offer insight into everyday mountain life. Trekkers are encouraged to respect local customs, seek permission before taking photographs, and greet residents with a “Namaste.”
Cuisine along the route is simple but nourishing. The staple meal is dal bhat—lentil soup with rice and vegetables—often accompanied by pickles and available with complimentary refills. A typical plate costs $4–$6. Other local specialties include Gundruk (fermented greens), Dhido (buckwheat porridge), and Tibetan bread. Apple pie is a surprisingly popular treat at teahouses from Chhomrong upward.
Yak cheese, produced locally, features in sandwiches and noodle dishes. Hot ginger tea and garlic soup are commonly enjoyed, both believed to aid in acclimatization. As trekkers ascend, meal prices rise, with food at ABC (4,130 m) costing $6–$10. Most dishes are vegetarian and prepared hygienically, with ingredients sourced from local farms. Sharing meals and stories with fellow trekkers and hosts adds a memorable cultural dimension to the journey.
Staying connected during the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is a mixed bag. In most lower villages—think Nayapul (1,070 m), Tikhedhunga (1,540 m), or Ghorepani (2,860 m)—you’ll find Wi-Fi at the lodges, sometimes free, sometimes they’ll make you cough up a few bucks. Once you start gaining elevation—Tadapani, Chhomrong, Bamboo—the Wi-Fi is still kicking, but the bars drop and the speed starts to crawl.
Above Deurali (3,230 m), especially when you hit Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700 m) and Annapurna Base Camp itself (4,130 m), internet turns into a rare (and pricey) luxury. Most places charge NPR 300–500 (around $2–4 USD) for Wi-Fi after Chhomrong. NTC mobile coverage? It ghosts you after Sinuwa. Ncell might hang on till Deurali if you’re lucky and the weather gods are smiling. If you have to pick, grab an NTC SIM for the broader coverage.
Don’t forget a power bank—those tea house plugs get competitive—and buy your data packs in Pokhara or Kathmandu before heading out. Most trekkers stick to messaging apps to send a quick “I’m alive” to family or post a triumphant selfie when they hit Wi-Fi. But if you’re thinking of working or video calls up there? Forget about it.
If things go sideways, guides have satellite phones above Deurali. Connectivity gets dodgy the higher you go, but lodges do what they can. My advice? Enjoy being unplugged for once—those mountains beat Instagram any day.
Hot showers—oh man, they’re a treat on this trek, but don’t get your hopes too high. Down low (Nayapul, Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani), you might score a free hot shower, or pay a small fee (NPR 100–200). Water’s usually heated with gas or solar—eco-friendly, but sometimes unreliable.
Climb higher to Chhomrong, Bamboo, or Deurali, and the price ticks up (NPR 200–400). Above 3,000 m, it’s mostly solar heating, so if the weather’s gloomy, you’re outta luck. At Machapuchare Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp? Hot showers are almost mythical. If you find one, expect to pay up to NPR 500 ($4 USD), and brace yourself for water that’s more “warm-ish” than actually hot.
Honestly, in the really cold stretches, most trekkers skip showers for days. Wet wipes become your best friend. Don’t expect great water pressure or reliable temps, and pipes freeze at night up high. Best bet: shower early afternoon, before it gets freezing. Some places use buckets if the pipes ice up. Always ask ahead if you’re banking on a hot wash.
Above Deurali, focus on staying warm and healthy—not squeaky clean. Hot showers feel amazing when you get ‘em, but don’t expect luxury. Pack accordingly, and embrace the grit.
The ABC Trek kicks off at Nayapul (1,070 m)—about a 90-minute drive from Pokhara (820 m). Classic route? You’ll hit Tikhedhunga (1,540 m), Ulleri (2,050 m), then Ghorepani (2,860 m). A lot of folks do a sunrise detour to Poon Hill (3,210 m) for the view—totally worth the early wake-up—then continue east through Tadapani (2,630 m) and Chhomrong (2,170 m).
Another route is via Jhino Danda directly. If you choose your ABC Trek via Jhino Danda, you will skip Poon Hill and Ghandurk village. You will drive to Jhino Danda from Pokhara spending 3-4 hours by jeep and begin the official trek to Chhomrong village to get the main ABC Trekking trail.
From Chhomrong, you drop down to the river, then start the climb through Sinuwa (2,340 m), Bamboo (2,310 m), Dovan (2,600 m), and Deurali (3,230 m). The final push passes Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700 m) and—finally—Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m). Total distance is 70–80 km, depending on side trips.
The route’s got a nice, steady climb, which helps with acclimatization. Most people knock it out in 7–10 days. You’ll double back down the same trail, unless you go for one of the alternate loops via Landruk or Ghandruk for a taste of local culture.
Expect to walk 6–15 km a day—about 4–7 hours. You’ll trek past rhododendron forests, terraced hillsides, bamboo thickets, and wild high-alpine valleys. The mountain views—Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare, Annapurna I—are next level.
It’s a trek that balances jaw-dropping scenery with just enough challenge to make it feel epic. Perfect for fit newbies or intermediate hikers looking for a proper Himalayan adventure.
Bring a good map—seriously, don’t wing it. The route starts at Nayapul (1,070 m), hits Tikhedhunga (1,540 m), Ulleri (2,050 m), and Ghorepani (2,860 m). After checking out Poon Hill (3,210 m), the trail drops to Tadapani (2,630 m), then onto Chhomrong (2,170 m)—the last sizeable village before you hit the real wilderness.
From Chhomrong, your map will show the route dipping to the Modi Khola, then up to Sinuwa (2,340 m), Bamboo (2,310 m), Dovan (2,600 m), Himalaya (2,920 m), Deurali (3,230 m), MBC (3,700 m), and finally ABC (4,130 m), surrounded by massive peaks.
Offline GPS apps like Maps.me or Gaia GPS are clutch—they’ll track your elevation and distance. Old-school paper topo maps are handy too—grab one in Pokhara or Kathmandu for NPR 500–700. Double-check it’s up-to-date with the latest lodges and route tweaks.
Total distance, again, runs about 70–80 km. Trails are marked, but if the weather turns, having a guide (and a map you actually understand) can save your butt. Study your route each day so you’re not caught off guard, and use the map to plan breaks. Plus, let’s be real, maps make you look super prepared in photos.
You can buy physical map from Kathmandu or Pokhara before you head to Annapruna Base Camp.

The Poon Hill segment greatly assists with acclimatization, reducing the likelihood of altitude sickness. This route is ideal for those seeking early mountain vistas and who possess moderate fitness and sufficient time for an extended trek to Annapurna Base Camp.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is well-suited for beginners, provided they are adequately prepared. Some people take Annapurna Base Camp Trek as an easy and some consider it as a moderate trek. Some basic skills of hiking and trekking will be sufficient for Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trail is not technical but moderately difficult. It seems an easy hike but, in fact, it is a bit strenuous in the sense that one requires hiking at least 7 hours a day with steep ups and downs equally covering at least 10-12 kilometers distance each day. The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trail is safe; no threats of avalanches and landslides and even no threats of wild animals of Annapurna Conservation Area.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trail is mostly through the pine, birch, juniper, fir and rhododendron and local villages with teahouses and lodges. If you go Annapurna Base Camp in Spring, you will enjoy magnificent rhododendron flowering in different seven colors which entirely blankets the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trail till Deurali (3200m).
The steep walk of Jhino Danda initially seems to be very challenging to climb up Chhomrong for at least 3 hours. This tiring walk really makes the trekkers who are doing Annapurna Base Camp Trek almost hopeless but rest of the trails is less challenging and less strenuous.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trail after Deurali is less strenuous and less steep while ascending to Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. However, due to high elevation above 3500m, one may feel little difficult in pacing and breathing. Overall, the ascents and docents are equal in distance and hours that one has to encounter. The steepest among them is Jhino Danda ascent to Chhomrong village if you are beginning from Jhino Danda. Alternatively, you can combine Ghorepani-Poonhill Trek with Annapurna Base Camp Trek. IF you go with ABC Trek with Poonhill, you don’t need to encounter this steep ascent from the base of the Jhino Danda. You will have flat trail directly going to Chhomrong from Tadapani.

It is very important to consider whether to go with bus ride to Pokhara from Kathmandu and back or by air. If you have an important schedule and important thing to do right after and before your Annapurna Base Camp Trek, it is recommended to go with domestic flight to and from Pokhara. Another big issue will be the issue of heavy traffic on Prithvi Highway and the 6 hours drive from and to Pokhara may prolong like 10-12 hours sometimes. Again, if you have travel sickness, please try your best to escape this 6-8 hours drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara and back.
Another important thing to consider is that if you are completely beginner and learning to hike for 3-4 hours in a day covering less than 7 kilometers, please, don’t try to go Annapurna Base Camp which is located at 4130m above the sea level. One requires good level of stamina, condidence and preparations for Annapurna Base Camp. Make sure that you have packed all required trekking gears and can walk at least 7 hours a day covering 10-12 kilometers distance in average in a day, then only, go for Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
Make your Annapurna Base Camp Trek either in Spring ( Mar-May) or in Autumn( Sep-Nov).
Personally, what like most about Annapurna Base Camp Trek is stepping at Annapurna Base Camp and capturing giant Annapurna South and alluring Machhapuchhre. Along with this, one can enjoy the walk through Annapurna Conservation Area with diverse species of flora and fauna. Moreover, trekkers will find Pokhara city as paradise for relaxation and refreshment. The final and the most important thing in Annapurna Base Camp Trek is the natural hot springs of Jhino Danda where trekkers can release all weariness and exhaustion at the end of the trek by dipping their bodies into the natural hot water at the bank of Modi River.
Tipping for your guide and porter is not mandatory but they expect something extra from you after they work hard for you. Isn’t it? You’d better prepare USD 5-10 per day per individual guide and porter. But, it doesn’t mean that you have to do the same as we recommend you. You reward them with some handsome tipping as well if you are fully satisfied. Sometimes, you don’t need to reward them with tipping if they don’t take a good care of you and try to spoil your trip with some unnecessary personal benefits and interests. Nevertheless, tipping ( little or more) seems to be mandatory in present world while doing a vacation trip.
You will enjoy, mostly, freshly cooked local cuisines during the trip. The local teahouse and lodges will offer you very authentic local cuisines like tsampa, porridge, Tibetan bread, yak meat items, locally grown vegetables and fruits, etc. They also offer some continental, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and popular dishes during the trek as mentioned on their food menu. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, no problem, you will have various items of meals in the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and for this, you require informing your trek leader before the trek commences.
You can cook on your own at local lodges while staying overnight during the trip in the mountain on the condition that you won’t disturb and if the kitchen is not crowded if you have this hobby. You can carry the instant noodles and can prepare in your room during your Annapurna Base Camp trek. The meals you have will be freshly cooked and very hygienic in order to ensure your balanced diet and hygiene. Pick up the item from food menu prepared by local lodges and teahouses and ask them to prepare it for you.
