2. Effects of August 2026 Flood on the Langtang Valley Trek

The Langtang Valley was hit hard by this recent flooding event. The Bhotekoshi-Trishuli River flooded on the 26th August causing damage to roads, bridges, trails and buildings around Syabrubesi.

Flood damage in Syabrubesi has affected local infrastructure and trekking access.

Here, this caused issues with access to the valley from Dhunche-Syabrubesi (road closure). However the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) have confirmed the trekking routes (Langtang, Kyanjin and Gosaikunda) are open.

However, by the 23rd October the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) have stated a new Bailey Bridge was installed at Betrawati restoring partial access back towards Dhunche and Thulo Syabru. Though not all of the trail around Syabrubesi are fully back to normal.

Thulo Syabru offers an alternative access route to explore the Langtang region when the usual trail is affected.

Summary of Effects from the 2026 Langtang Flood.

Road damage – classical route to region impacted via Syabrubesi

Transport and supply issues – difficult to transport goods/resources

Tourism businesses interrupted – lodges, guides, porters and other local tourism business.

Trekking routes - Trekkers can still access but must confirm certain trail sections.

Region opened again – As stated by TAAN in October, 2026, the region are now open. But they do state to continue to take precautions.

Effects of Flood and Current Conditions

Route Section |  Current Conditions

Sybrubesi route |  Severe damage, Not guaranteed safe access.

Betrawati Bridge |  Installed by October 2026.

Access to Dhunche/Thulo Syabru |  Opened.

Langtang Village/Kyanjin |  Open for trekking.

Gosaikunda | Open (Conditions depend on route and weather).

Importantly, try to always confirm the latest local conditions before travelling to your destination. Heavy rain may impact how safe certain roads, bridges and trails are. Even if your destination is open to trekkers you should still consider whether certain sections will be safe.

3. Conditions of Langtang Valley Trail after 2026 flood

Langtang Valley, Kyanjin Gompa and Gosaikunda are currently open (October 2026) according to the Trekking Agency’s Association of Nepal (TAAN).

However, damage caused by the floods in August 2026 have impacted the traditional approach from Syabra besi, trekkers should be aware of the conditions of the trails, bridges and road when trying to reach their destination.

Trekkers explore the beautiful Langtang Valley trail surrounded by forests and majestic mountains.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Trekkers can now go to Dhunche & Thulo Syabru from Kathmandu and onwards to Lama Hotel and the Upper Langtang Valley. Or the alternative route is to go via Sundarijal to Chisapani, Gosaikunda and onto Thulo Syabru. Confirm what routes and places are open.

Langtang Valley Trek Conditions:

Route/Place | Status to Know
Syabru besi approach| Very damaged (Confirm they are closed.)

Dhunche to Thulo Syabru.| This is an alternative route. Cross- check Road, bridge & trail conditions.
Lama Hotel and Upper Langtang Valley| Open to trek, cross-check trail conditions & accommodation.
Sundarijal to Gosaikunda to Thulo Syabru| Alternative trail, have extra time to trek at high altitudes.

Important Considerations:

Check road, bridge conditions with locals & trekking agency.
Hire a professional trekking guide though a local trekking company
Talk to a guide on the land slips, crossings and any alternative routes.
Extra days can be added. Be flexible with your days in case of bad weather, changes in transportation.
Allow yourself to acclimatize slowly. You will need to make sure you have enough time to reach higher points.
Check locally. Conditions can change quickly after heavy rain and during restoration periods.

Although it is reported there is an alternative route to trek the Langtang Valley, you will need to check the conditions of a route section by section. Just because it is announced as being open doesn’t mean all trails to the place are fully restored.

4. Langtang Valley Trek through Dhunche & Thulo Syabru

One alternative route for the Langtang Valley Trek is through Dhunche & Thulo Syabru (due to flood damage August 2026). According to the TAAN you can reach Trishuli, Betrawati and onwards to Dhunche or Thulo Syabru via the road. Trek on to Bamboo, Lama Hotel, Langtang Village and Kyanjin Gompa.

In fact, this new Itinerary will not use the traditional route up from Syabra besi. However, you should confirm if the vehicles can be used, trail conditions and accommodations available.

The Sundarijal-Gosaikunda route will take longer to complete and will require more physical preparation as you will pass through villages in Helambu, alpine lakes and a high mountain pass.
