Highlights

  • The sunrise from Poon Hill (3210m) is everything. You drag yourself out of bed before dawn and head up to the viewpoint. Suddenly, the sky turns gold and the peaks—Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal—light up in wild colors. It’s one of those sights you just don’t forget.
  • The mountain views at sunrise. From Poon Hill, you get these insane 360-degree panoramas—snowy giants everywhere you look. Annapurna South stands out, but there are more than 20 big peaks on display. You get the full mountain experience here, but without having to go too high up.
  • The spectacular trail winds through forests: Feel almost enchanted, especially in spring when the rhododendrons explode in color. You’ll walk under oak trees, hear waterfalls, and breathe in that cold, clean mountain air. The Annapurna Conservation Area is alive with all sorts of plants and birds.
  • The local culture’s just as memorable as the scenery: You’ll pass through Gurung villages like Ghorepani and Ghandruk, where people actually seem happy to see you. The stone houses with slate roofs, little museums, terraced fields, and daily life give you a real sense of the place. The hospitality feels genuine.
  • This trek isn’t just for experienced. It’s doable for families, beginners, or anyone who doesn’t have weeks to spare. You walk five to seven hours a day, never higher than 3210m, so the risk of altitude sickness stays low. Still, the climbs get your heart pumping—and the views make it all worth it.
  • The Poon Hill Trek route itself is fun: stone steps, swaying suspension bridges, and village trails, all set to the sound of the Modi Khola river rushing below. After a day’s walk, you get to kick back in teahouses—hot meals, warm beds, maybe even a shower if you’re lucky.
  • And honestly, for what you get, it’s a steal: You start and finish in Pokhara, with jeep rides to the trailheads. Four days is all it takes to squeeze in big Himalayan views, local culture, and wild nature. The whole trip usually costs $300-500 per person, which covers guides, permits, meals, and transport. Pretty good deal for a full-on mountain adventure.

Best Time for Poon Hill Trek

If you want the perfect Poon Hill Trek, go in spring or autumn. That’s when the skies really open up — clear and blue from March to May or September to November. In spring, the rhododendrons light up the forests around Ghorepani (2860m), painting everything in color. Autumn, on the other hand, brings cool, crisp air and those razor-sharp views of Annapurna South (7219m). Days feel mild, the weather settles down, and sunrise at Poon Hill (3210m) becomes something you won’t forget.

In fact, people pick these months (Sep, Oct, Nov-Mar, April and May) for good reason. Spring means forests in bloom and daytime temperatures at Ghorepani hovering between 15 and 20°C. Autumn, right after the monsoon, is all about sharp mountain views and cool, comfortable hikes, with days between 10 and 20°C. Winter nights can bite, dropping to -5°C, and the monsoon just soaks the trails and hides the mountains behind clouds. If you want fewer crowds, late September is a sweet spot too. But really, spring and autumn are when the Himalayas put on their best show — the trails are at their finest, and the views are as clear as they get.

Seasonal Overview:
  • Autumn (Sep-Nov): Peak season, clearest skies, crisp views, moderate crowds.
  • Spring (Mar-May): Rhododendrons bloom, mild weather, excellent photography.
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Cold (-5 to 5°C nights), fewer people, possible snow.
  • Monsoon (Jun-Aug): Heavy rain, slippery trails, limited visibility.

Trip Itinerary

4 Day Poon Hill Trek Itinerary: Overview

Here, the 4-day Poon Hill Trek, often called the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, kicks off right after a scenic jeep or bus ride from Pokhara up to Ulleri. You skip the lower trails from Nayapul or Tikhedhunga and Ulleri Steep Stone Steps so there’s no waiting around—you just hop out and start hiking. This route is perfect for anyone who wants to get to the heart of the mountains faster while still soaking up the good stuff: wild sunrises, green forests, and the local Gurung culture. Even with the shortcut, it stays friendly for first-timers—steady walking each day, nothing too extreme, and plenty of cozy teahouses along the way.

Day one starts with that 2 to 3-hour drive from Pokhara to Ulleri. Once you step off the jeep, the climb begins through Magar villages and forests thick with rhododendron and oak. The trail rises pretty consistently, with those classic stone steps, and you’ll cover 8 to 10 kilometers in about 4 to 6 hours before reaching Ghorepani. Along the way, you get cool mountain air, birds calling, and now and then a peek at distant peaks. So, this first day is really about getting used to the altitude and just soaking in the Annapurna region before you settle into a teahouse in Ghorepani for the night.

Day two is the big one. You get up before dawn and make the short but steep hike from Ghorepani to Poon Hill—just 2 kilometers, but it wakes you up fast. It only takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and at the top, you catch that famous sunrise. Suddenly, the whole horizon lights up—Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, and Lamjung Himal all glowing gold in every direction. After the sunrise show and a quick descent for breakfast, you keep walking through misty woods and open ridges on your way to Tadapani. It’s about 6 to 8 kilometers and takes 4 to 5 hours, with quieter trails, deep forest, and up-close views of Annapurna South.

On day three, you leave Tadapani and head down to Ghandruk, a lively Gurung village known for its slate-roofed houses and terraced fields. The trail drops gently for 6 to 7 kilometers, usually taking 3 to 4 hours. There’s time to wander through the village, check out the museum, grab a fresh meal, and meet people. The walk down brings you sweeping mountain views and a deeper taste of local culture.

Finally, the fourth day wraps things up with a jeep ride from Ghandruk back to Pokhara. The drive takes around 2 to 3 hours, winding through the hills for about 60 kilometers. And that’s it—your trek ends just as smoothly as it began. Starting from Ulleri means you pack the best of the Himalayas—sunrise over snowy peaks, peaceful forests, and vibrant villages—into just four days. It’s quick, it’s beautiful, and it leaves you wanting more.

Here, the beginners adventure to Poon Hill 4 days kicks off with a drive out of Pokhara, winding through green valleys and terraced fields. You’ll follow the Modi Khola River, bouncing along rough roads for a couple of hours—maybe by jeep, maybe a bus—until you reach Ulleri or Banthanti. The villages sit higher up, so you’ll already notice the air getting a little crisper. The drive itself isn’t just a way to get there; it’s a first taste of rural Nepal, with glimpses of farmers working the land and those hazy Himalayan foothills in the distance.

Once the jeep stops, you’re trekking right away. The trail wastes no time—it heads up on stone steps and dirt paths, a steady climb but nothing too crazy, even if you’re new to trekking. From Ulleri, it’s about 7 or 8 kilometers to Ghorepani, usually taking 4 or 5 hours and climbing about 800 meters. If you start from Banthanti, it’s a bit shorter and easier. You’ll walk on solid stone staircases, and if it’s been raining, expect some muddy spots. The best part? You spend a lot of time under the shade of rhododendron and oak trees, which is a relief when the sun’s out.

Along the way, you’ll pass through small Magar and Gurung villages. People here are busy with their fields or watching over goats and buffalo, and you get a real sense of daily life. Sometimes you’ll spot prayer flags fluttering, or catch a glimpse of someone weaving baskets from bamboo. As you climb, the trees start to thin and—suddenly—Annapurna South and Hiunchuli poke through, towering above everything. There’s something about those first mountain views that just hits different.

By late afternoon, the air turns cooler. If you’re lucky, you might see a langur monkey swing by, or spot flashes of color from birds in the trees. Once you reach Ghorepani, the village feels lively but welcoming. There’s time to explore, sip tea in a cozy teahouse, and fill up on dal bhat as you settle in for the night.

Day two starts early—really early. Before dawn, you set out from Ghorepani, headlamp on, and join the line of trekkers climbing up to Poon Hill. It’s a short, sharp climb, just under two kilometers, but those stone steps keep your legs honest. In the dark, you can hear voices and see torchlight weaving up the trail. Sometimes there’s frost or even a dusting of snow if it’s winter, but most days the path is dry and easy to follow.

Here, the reward for the early wakeup is unbeatable. On top of Poon Hill, the sun rises over a jaw-dropping sweep of peaks—Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, and more. The mountains go gold, the valleys glow, and you get a full 360-degree view that’s honestly hard to put into words. Cameras come out, but it’s a moment you want to just soak in, too.

After the sunrise show, you head back down for breakfast in Ghorepani. Then it’s time to hit the trail to Tadapani. This stretch takes a good half-day, with a mix of climbing and descending that adds up to a net drop in altitude. The trail cuts through thick rhododendron forests—if it’s spring, the trees explode with pink flowers. You’ll cross streams on rickety wooden bridges, hop over rocks, and maybe pause at a quiet viewpoint or by a waterfall.

More importantly, Keep your eyes open for birds like the Himalayan monal, Nepal’s flashy national bird, and watch the porters haul impossible loads up the trail. By the time you reach Tadapani, you’re tucked into the trees again, with close-up views of Annapurna South and the scent of pine in the air. It’s the perfect place to kick off your boots, relax in a teahouse, and let the day sink in.

On day three, you leave Tadapani behind and start heading down toward Ghandruk. It’s an easy walk—mostly downhill, dropping about 690 meters as you go from 2630m to 1940m. The trail covers 5 to 7 kilometers and usually takes three to four hours. Most of the time, you’re on stone steps or forest paths, shaded by bamboo and bright rhododendrons. If it’s rained recently, watch your step—it can get slippery, but otherwise it’s a pretty gentle walk.

You’ll notice the landscape changing as you go. The dense woods start to thin out, giving way to open farmland and terraced fields. You’ll cross streams, pass by small chortens, and every so often, the trees open up to reveal huge views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre standing tall above the green rice paddies.

By the time you reach Ghandruk, it feels like you’ve stepped straight into a postcard. The village is famous for its Gurung culture. You can wander into the Gurung Museum to check out traditional tools, clothing, and artifacts, or just stroll around and take in the stone houses with their slate roofs. The locals are friendly—don’t be surprised if you end up chatting with someone in a bright patterned dress or watch someone weaving or tending millet in the fields. There’s time to relax, too. Maybe grab a seat at a teahouse, order some fresh Gurung bread, and just soak in those big Himalayan views. Before turning in for the night, walk the flower-lined alleys and let the calm of the place sink in.

Breakfast

The last day of Poon Hill Trek 4 days starts slow, with breakfast in Ghandruk and one last look at the mountains. No more trekking now—just hop in a jeep or bus for the drive back to Pokhara. The road winds down through the hills, dropping over a thousand meters in a couple of hours. Parts of it are pretty bumpy, especially on the gravel stretches, but you’ll get used to the rhythm soon enough.

There’s not a ton to see on the way, but you might stop for a quick photo here and there—maybe a roadside village, maybe an overlook with one last peek at the Annapurnas. You’ll pass scattered farms and kids waving from the fields, and sometimes you can buy honey or a handmade basket as a souvenir. And then, just like that, you’re back in Pokhara, with time to chill by the lake or head out for whatever comes next.
