Enjoy Majestic Peaks from Poon Hill and Soothing Hot Springs at Jhino Danda
The Poon Hill-Jhino Danda Hot Spring Trek offers magnificent views of the Himalayas, traditional Gurung-Magar settlements, lush rhododendron forests, and natural hot springs. The itinerary starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then to Nayapul/Birethanti. Trekkers follow enchanting trails leading to the traditional Gurung-Magar villages of Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, and Ghorepani.
The high point of the trek includes an early morning ascent to Poon Hill (3,210 m). It is famous for its incredible sunrise views of Annapurna I (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), and many more. Following their stay at the viewing point, trekkers hike down through lush rhododendron forests to Tadapani and the largest Gurung village of Ghandruk.
Finally, trekkers reach Jhino Danda (1,780 m), which is a small village located near natural hot springs by the Modi Khola River. After days of rigorous treks, soaking in the mineral-rich waters is very relaxing for the weary legs of the trekkers. Trekkers return to Siwai/Nayapul after their bath and then make their way to Pokhara. This easy and short trek is recommended for families, beginners, and those who want to experience both mountain views and culture.
Here, your trekking to Poon Hill and Jhino Hot Spring begins in the early morning with a picturesque 3-hour 4WD jeep drive from Pokhara (820m) to Ulleri (2,050m), a distance of about 45km. Initially, the road is smooth and sealed all the way to Nayapul and Birethanti, but it soon turns into rough, winding dirt road as it winds through green river valleys and terraced hills. Driving all the way to colorful Ulleri means that you can avoid the excruciating climb of 3,000 stone steps required on the classic Tikhedhunga trail and conserve energy for trekking up the mountain.
Upon arrival at Ulleri, you swap jeeps for your walking boots, embarking on the day’s trek, a moderately challenging hike of 8 to 9km that leads to beautiful Ghorepani (2,874m). The trail ascends consistently and without let-up, with an elevation gain of 824m spread across the 4 to 5 hour journey. As you walk, the dusty, relatively well-trodden path winds through vibrant and deep rhododendron and oak forests, with the frequent sight of picturesque waterfalls, babbling brooks and alpine pastures to lift your spirits. With every few hundred meters you gain on your way up to Banthanti and Nangge Thanti, the cool mountain air bites a bit more fiercely and occasional, glorious views of Annapurna South (7,219m) and Hiunchuli (6,441m) appear through the rich vegetation.
Finally, you emerge from the woods and into the charming blue-roofed village of Ghorepani, which is the starting point for the famous sunrise trip up to Poon Hill. You walk past lower Ghorepani village and arrive at main Ghorepani village.
Here, as you settle into the mountain teahouse, you’re rewarded immediately with outstanding panoramic views of both the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs and, after warming your toes by the stove and enjoying a tasty dinner, can recharge for an early start and another breathtaking panorama in the morning.
An early wake up call and in the dark you are on an energizing, 1 hour ascent from Ghode/Ghore Pani (2,874m) up to famous Poon Hill viewpoint, altitude 3,210 meters. Although a short 1.5 kilometer, steep climb this is an energy burning, early morning adventure where your headlamp will be indispensable.
Upon reaching the summit of Poon hill, you are greeted by the phenomenal views and the legendary, glorious spectacle of golden, rising sun illuminating Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993m) in a spectacular firey panorama.
After a generous amount of time and photo opportunities, you return to Ghode Pani for a nourishing, warm breakfast before packing and heading out for the main part of the days trekking toward Tadapani (2,630m) the next day. This part of the trek is a challenging 9-10 kilometers, and usually takes between 5-6 hours. It begins with a steep ascent from the village up to the scenic ridge of Deurali pass, (3,090m) at which point you have close-up views of the peaks that you have been watching since dawn.
Leaving this high altitude ridge you head down a steep descent into a beautiful gorge and deep Rhododendron and Oak forests where there is a prevalence of moss and an overall damp feel. This long descent continues to the river side village of Banthanti where trekkers usually have a rest stop for lunch, before another steep climb to your destination. After which you eventually emerge into Tadapani a tiny mountain village.
Optional Itinerary: If you arrive earlier at Tadapani from Ghorepani, you can proceed to Kimrung Danda for overnight stay. The group and the guide together can decide this on the trail as per the need of the group.
Wake up for an unforgettable sunrise view from Tadapani (2,630m) before setting off on a spectacular 5-6 hour trek to the riverside settlement of Jhinu Danda (1,780m). Covering between 9-10km and an overall 850m descent, the route begins steep and downwards through mossy, vibrant rhododendron, oak and bamboo forests, alive with local bird song and tumbling waterfalls. After the forested descent, the route opens up into well sculpted, terraced crop fields and hillside village of Chuile.
After crossing the raging Kimrong Khola by sturdy suspension bridge, you then face a short and steep ascent to the settlements of Gurjung and Taulung – local villages with plenty of cultural interaction and local hospitality. The path re-joins the main Annapurna Base Camp trail after the villages, and the steady, meandering descent takes you smoothly down to the village of Jhinu Danda.
Here, the true highlight of the day is just a 20-30 minute descent down the hillside from the main village. Down by the river at the banks of the raging Modi Khola river lies the most luxurious natural riverside hot springs, situated at the very edge of dense jungle. Relaxing in these hot thermal waters is a well-deserved treat, perfectly targeting and soothing aching legs after several days trekking. You'll then ascend back to your teahouse at Jhinu Danda.
On your last day in the Himalayas you will enjoy a final relaxed breakfast in Jhinu Danda (1780m) before continuing the last portion of your hike. The walk for today is relatively short taking approx 20-30 minutes to the river bottom. The key highlight of today’s trek is the suspension bridge crossing at Jhinu Danda which is one of the longest and highest suspension bridges for pedestrians anywhere in the region. This dramatically extends across the tumultuous Modi Khola and its incredible views of the river far below.
Upon exiting the bridge and arriving at your jeep station in or near Matque/Samrung will mark the end of your journey on foot. You will board a private 4WD jeep drive for the exciting and scenic drive back to Pokhara (820m). The journey covers approximately 40kms and takes around 3-4 hours depending on road and traffic.
Actually, the beginning of the drive follows a bumpy and somewhat rugged dirt road, which winds along the side of river cliffs and through villages with a last view of the fertile, terraced hillsides before connecting to a more developed road from Nayapul and Birethanti and continuing on to the clean asphalt road to Pokhara. As you reach the shores of Pokhara lake side and enjoy entire afternoon and evening with the activities you like in Pokhara.
